At the centre of the Dartington Estate stands the tower of the old St Mary’s Church. Most of the church was  removed and some of it was reused, when the ‘new’ church was built between 1878-90 in its current location at the entrance to the Dartington Estate. Only the Tower of the old St Mary’s was left and it remained consecrated into the 1990s but is now simply a historic building managed by the Dartington Trust.

Informally it retains its sanctity for many locals, visitors and pilgrims, with a table and icon of Mary, where many people continue to pray. Many consider the yew and the old church of St Mary to be the sacred heart of Dartington.
